Location: New England
Objective: Protect aging infrastructure from the
environment and repair failing coating areas.
Reason: In the Northeast, faced with severe seasonal weather, a reliable protective weatherproof coating is crucial for maintaining the longevity and efficiency of substation infrastructure.
Date: Winter and Spring 2023
Brief History: The station experienced leaks in their aging equipment housing that had been previously restored with a competing coating. The foam and elastomeric ceramic coating began to crack and crumble, which allowed water to intrude into the cabinets, damaging equipment during heavy rains. Midsun was brought in to waterproof the compromised areas and restore functionality to all structures using Midsun Silprocoat.

About Midsun Silprocoat:
Silprocoat is a one part silicone rubber elastomer coating designed for power system assets that are exposed to harsh conditions and at risk of corrosion. Once applied, it provides excellent longevity with minimal maintenance making it an ideal choice for coastal, industrial and desert areas. To provide maximum protection, Stopaq, a non-aging visco-elastic wrap, is applied as a spot primer tape in areas where leakage is a concern.
Application:
Since the previous ceramic coating was failing, a full inspection was done to identify problem areas. In areas with moderate to extreme deterioration, the crumbling foam and ceramic elastomer was removed and cleaned. Stopaq was used to reseal some surfaces. Installers rolled and brushed Midsun Silprocoat over the entire roof to offer full protection.
Why It Works:
- Midsun Silprocoat can be applied over most existing coatings.
- The coating is hydrophobic, allowing rainwater to wash away any contamination build-up on the surface.
- Silicone rubber will not crack, chalk or craze due to temperature fluctuation.
- It is not affected by UV, salt, or chemicals, giving it excellent aging properties.
- Little to no maintenance is required.

Problem Areas:
Several types of failures were happening across both stations including cracking, pitting, and crumbling to expose voids and holes in structures like switchgear cabinets and control houses.
Preparation:
The competitor’s failing foam and ceramic elastomer was removed. Exposed roofing was wiped, taped and prepped for new coating.
Applying Midsun Silprocoat:
The silicone rubber coating was rolled and brushed on to completely weatherproof structures.
